The Dontosai Festival, unique to Miyagi, takes place every January 14, with the largest event at Osaki Hachimangu Shrine in Sendai. People gather to toss last year’s New Year decorations into a bonfire as a prayer for health and good fortune. The highlight is the hadaka-mairi (naked pilgrimage), where participants in loincloths march through the cold to the shrine. Visitors can join the rituals, receive fortunes, and enjoy traditional foods like ramen and amazake.
