Nigeria’s electoral reform debate has taken a new turn after the Senate reversed its earlier position and amended the Electoral Act to permit electronic transmission of election results, while retaining manual collation as a backup in cases of connectivity failure. Lawmakers, meeting in an emergency plenary, have agreed that results should be uploaded electronically as the primary pathway, but Form EC8A will remain valid if transmission becomes impossible due to technical or internet-related disruptions. The shift has followed strong public backlash, including protests outside the National Assembly by civil society groups, activists and political parties calling for stronger transparency safeguards ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Senate has also set up a 12-member conference committee to harmonise its version of the bill with the House of Representatives’ draft, with the final text expected to be transmitted to President Tinubu for assent as early as this month. In this conversation, analysts interrogate whether the manual fallback is a necessary safeguard or a potential loophole, what INEC must build to prevent abuse, and whether this change can lift voter confidence in 2027.
