Driving along the A4 in Wiltshire near Avebury it is impossible to miss this giant hill, Silbury Hill, but what is it?
Silbury Hill is very close to the Avebury stone circles and the West Kennet Long Barrow.
It is thought to have been constructed around 2400BC.
It is a scheduled ancient monument - 31m or 100ft above the original ground surface level, the ditch around up to 9m deep or 29ft and the diameter of the hill about 150m 490ft effectively constructed using Antler picks and similar tools.
This is the largest artificial mound in Europe and the largest prehistoric chalk mound in the world.
The Romans built a fort on top, and to make it usable they had to flatten the top.
There is another hill nearby in Marlborough. The Marlborough Mound is a Neolithic mound, 19 m (60 ft) tall, that was constructed about 2400 BC, also a listed ancient Scheduled Monument.
This hill was used as a ready made motte or mound by the Normans and it became Marlborough Castle - now in the private grounds of Marlborough College.
Silbury Hill the hill was probably regularly scoured to keep it white - the same process used on White Horses such as at Uffington Castle.
Chalk springs feed the River Kennet and when the water table is high the whole area around Silbury Hill fills with water.
To visit, there is a car park next to the mound and a viewing area, but this is the closest we are allowed to get now.
