For this project, I gave my kitchen island a full makeover by adding two pull-out drawers, a pull-out trash bin, and a new storage cabinet to make the space a lot more functional. I walk through opening up the frame, building a new base, framing everything out, custom-building the drawers, installing soft-close slides, and finishing it all with new cabinet doors and paint.
This island started as a solid block, and now it has smooth pull-outs, a hidden trash can, dedicated storage for cutting boards and kitchen tools, and soft-close hardware that completely changed how the space works.
I built the drawer boxes from three-quarter inch plywood, added soft-close slides for both the drawers and the trash pull-out, made custom cabinet doors from particle board, and finished everything in Behr’s French Colony.
Seeing it all come together honestly made it feel like a brand new kitchen island.
