TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS:

With just five (5) days into the new year, eight (8) persons have been murdered. All of the victims were adult males and firearms were used in four (4) of the killings while two (2) others were believed to have been chopped and one (1) stabbed.
• The killings happened in Caroni (2); Penal (1); Morvant (1); San Juan (1); Claxton Bay (1) and Maloney (2)

A police-involved shooting left two (2) dead at Mt. D'or Road, Champ Fleurs on Thursday 05th January, 2023.
• Around 4:30 am, officers of the northern division, during an anti-crime exercise, attempted to execute a search warrant at the home of Joel Hannibal, a person of interest in recent shootings and murders in the area.
• Reportedly, the officers were confronted by two persons armed with firearms who refused commands to drop their weapons.
• The suspects, identified as Jerome Charles and Andrew Blacks, were engaged and shot.
• Police added that the men ran a short distance away but collapsed and were taken to the mt. Hope hospital where they were declared dead.
• An ak-47 rifle with 18 rounds of 7.62 ammunition and a Glock 17 9mm pistol with 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition were recovered at the scene.
• 28-year-old Joel Hannibal and 26-year-old Jenielle Criss both of the same address at mt. D'or road in champ fleurs were taken into police custody.

A Piarco man was shot and wounded near his home in Kelly Trace, Piarco on Tuesday 03rd January, 2023.
• The victim was identified as 54-year-old Mark Anthony Corraspe of Piarco.
• Around 10:45pm, several loud explosions were heard in the area.
• Upon making checks, Mark’s family members discovered him lying in his yard suffering from gunshot injuries to his face and the back of his head.
• Mark was taken to the hospital for treatment where he remains warded.
A Mt Hope man was shot during an argument on Tuesday 03rd January, 2023.
• The victim was identified as 26-year-old Malachi Brann of Sorillo Drive, Mt Hope.
• Around 8:45am, Brann got into an argument with two men known to him, behind the mt hope secondary school.
• During the argument, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and shot him before they fled the scene in a blue Hino Dump Truck registered TCJ 7570.
• Brann was taken to mt hope hospital where he remains warded.

A Chaguanas man was denied bail after he was charged with importing high-powered weapons on Tuesday 03rd January, 2023.
• The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Shaquille Joseph, a welder of Chaguanas who was arrested on Thursday 29th December 2022 by officers of the customs and excise division.
• Joseph appeared before a Couva magistrate and was charged with the offence of importing restricted goods into Trinidad and Tobago, including nine high-powered rifles, 23 magazines of 5.56 ammunition, three rifle barrels, one silencer, one double-barrel drum and other firearm accessories worth approximately $600,000.
• He was also charged with having these goods packed in a manner to deceive customs officers as they were concealed in a welded metal workstation that had a false compartment.
• He was denied bail and remanded into custody and will reappear before the court on Tuesday 31st January, 2023.
