It was during the 1930s in Chicago, Illinois when Bell & Howell revolutionized amateur motion-picture recording and playback with their creation of a series of 8mm film projectors and cameras. Among this grouping was the Bell & Howell 8mm Filmo “Master” Projector series, which allowed users to play previously recorded films within their own homes.
Bell & Howell in association with Bruno Stechhart and others, were awarded a number of U.S. based patents in the creation of this projector during the early and mid-1930’s. For those who may be interested, these patents are public information and were listed on the side of the projector as follows:
U.S. Pat. No.
1,587,955
1,624,732
1,675,554
1,834,707
1,975,336
Various projector models exist from this era, many with similar names. Our spotlight version for this episode features an electric drive motor that draws 6 amps at 115v, a gear driven transmission that runs in both forward and reverse as well as a Bell & Howell branded lamp (patent number 675,554) to power the projection.
As with most old equipment, there are many unknowns and slightly modified factory versions that may not be well documented. If you know something that we clearly don't know about the model we’ve filmed, it would be greatly appreciated if you were to share your knowledge in the comments below.
This is not a paid promotion for the Bell & Howell Company, we simply love showcasing functional old machinery.
