Hi, my name is Heather Ford and I am a traffic attorney out of New Orleans, also known as The Traffic Ticket Lady. Sometimes I get asked, “doesn't it cost more to hire a traffic attorney than if I just pay the ticket?” And it just depends. It's very possible if you have a single ticket charge like just speeding, and the attorney is able to get the charge reduced to a nonmoving violation, by the time you hire the attorney and pay the nonmoving, it might be more than if you had just paid the ticket itself. But that's really the answer for today, the real question is, how much will it cost you over the span of a year or two? If your insurance goes up, say $25 to $50 a month because of that speeding ticket over the next couple of years, then it probably would have been a good investment to hire someone.
And the other option might have been for you just to go to your court yourself and try to get the ticket reduced to the nonmoving violation. So you don't always need an attorney. But I do always encourage you to not take those moving violations. They really can impact your record. It might not seem like a big deal today. But you might get a new position where driving is part of your duties and all of a sudden that speeding ticket you had a year and a half or two years ago, can be problematic. I get those phone calls from clients, and we have to try to see if it's possible to reopen those cases and it's a lot more complicated.
So if you have a moving violation is a single charge. Yes, if you hire someone, it might cost you a little bit more than paying it. But I can tell you for most people, the majority of the time it’s worth keeping them with a moving violation after you record. It just gives you more options in the future about the type of jobs you might want to do. Maybe you don't want to Uber, a side gig like that. Those tickets do impact you. If you ever have a question about traffic matters or a suspended license I'd be happy to give you my thoughts.
