The Diocese was erected on the 23rd of February 1997 ,with Bishop Matthias Ssekamanya as its First Ordinary until 4th November 2014, when Pope Francis appointed a new shepherd in the names of The Rt. Rev. Christopher Kakooza, who was installed as Bishop of Lugazi on 3rd January 2015
