3 Mistakes to Avoid when Climbing your Leadership Mountain

Our daughter Danae is working at a Medical Educational Mission at the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Initially she says she’s not going to climb, but she changes her mind. In her research she discovers that 50% don’t make it. What causes them to throw in the towel? What mistakes do they make, and how can that help us as leaders handle this Era of Exponential Growth, this Digital Disruption, the cancel culture, and this crazy fear pandemic?

Here are the three mistakes:

• They choose the wrong route,
• They choose the wrong mindset, and
• They choose the wrong guide.

Let’s tackle these:

Choosing the wrong route: Many climbers choose the shortest route. The result? They fail due to lack of oxygen. And I believe that today’s challenges also have the potential to steal your leadership oxygen. If your character isn’t strong enough, you’ll stall out, trying to catch your breath in the midst of all the changes that are happening. So, it’s important to fuel your leadership oxygen by having a character core.

Next, negative mindset: Negativity can crush a leader. A culture of criticizing, condemning, and complaining can sabotage your ability to reach your goals, and your energy is sapped.

Finally, choosing the wrong guide: Climbers fail because they don’t have the support they need. A trusted, experienced guide is an important “to have” in your “mountaineering kit” - no matter what kind of leadership that you’re involved in.
