Описание: At the beginning of the thirteenth century, the Duke of Brabant , Henry I, settled in Tervuren. His castle was located on the headland between the confluence of the Maelbeek and the Voer . The castle of Tervuren would mainly serve as a base for hunting. When Albrecht and Isabella became governors of the Southern Netherlands in 1599, the castle was decorated as a country retreat for the couple. In the same period, the Saint Huburtus Chapel was built, just southeast of the castle. In the eighteenth century the castle was under Charles of Lorraineconverted for the last time into a summer residence. The original checkerboard pattern of the warande , which lies to the east of the castle, was changed to a star-shaped pattern, which still exists today. Seven avenues in the forest converge at a central point.

By an imperial decree of Joseph II , the ducal castle was demolished in 1782. The then governor, Maria Christina of Austria , will, however, have a new castle erected in Laeken .

When Belgium becomes independent in 1830, the entire Warande will become the property of the Belgian state. In 1853, King Leopold I assigns the domain to his eldest son and heir to the throne, Leopold II . Under the supervision of the Crown Prince, the Park of Tervuren will be greatly expanded. The assignment for this was entrusted in 1856 to the German Belgian landscape architect Edouard Keilig .

The impetus for the construction of the current park came with the World Exhibition of 1897 , during which the colonial part took place in Tervuren. Avenue de Tervuren was built in 1895 to connect the park with Brussels. During the World Exhibition, Congolese villages were constructed in the Warande and populated with Congolese people. Leopold II had the Africa Palace built as an exhibition space on the ruins of the pavilion that burned down in 1879. Due to limited capacity, construction began in 1905 on a new Colonial Museum, now known as the Royal Museum for Central Africa . In 1911 it is inaugurated by the new king, Albert I. A year later, the entire domain is transferred as a public park to the then services of Waters en Bossen .

The Royal Museum for Central Africa or RMCA (Dutch: Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika or KMMA; French: Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale or MRAC; German: Königliches Museum für Zentralafrika or KMZA), colloquially known as the Africa Museum, is an ethnography and natural history museum situated in Tervuren in Flemish Brabant, Belgium, just outside Brussels. It was built to showcase King Leopold II's Congo Free State in the 1897 World Exhibition.

The museum focuses on the Congo, a former Belgian colony. The sphere of interest however (especially in biological research) extends to the whole Congo River basin, Middle Africa, East Africa, and West Africa, attempting to integrate "Africa" as a whole. Intended originally as a colonial museum, from 1960 onwards it has focused more on ethnography and anthropology. Like most museums, it houses a research department in addition to its public exhibit department.

Not all research pertains to Africa (e.g. research on the archaeozoology of Sagalassos, Turkey). Some researchers have strong ties with the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

In November 2013, the museum closed for extensive renovation work (including the construction of new exhibition space) and re-opened in December 2018.
