Access to clean drinking (potable) water is a common challenge. The standard practice is to boil water, however this uses precious wood and charcoal resources. An alternative method for treating water is by solar distillation. Using the UV of sunlight to treat the water.
Fill glass bottles with the water and place them on the roof in direct sunlight. If the roof is unsuitable, then place the glass bottles on a black/dark surface e.g. black bag on the ground (where they can't get broken). The bottles should be in strong sunlight for at least 5 hours. If its an overcast day, then the bottles should be in the sun for 48 hours.
This video demonstrates how to use solar distillation to treat water, and thereby reduce the dependence on wood and charcoal.
