On September 28, 1994, the MS Estonia sank in the Baltic Sea in less than one hour. 852 people died. It is the deadliest peacetime shipwreck in European waters since the Titanic. Almost nobody outside Scandinavia has ever heard of it.
Arthur Graves uses forensic AI reconstruction to stand on the vehicle deck of the Estonia before the disaster begins. A fifty-tonne steel door, held by three locks that were never designed for open ocean crossings, tore off the bow in a storm. Water flooded the car deck. The ship capsized in thirty-five minutes. 650 people were still inside when it sank.
No child under 12 survived. The ship's certificate of seaworthiness was based on an inspection that never took place. The investigator's conclusion: a disaster waiting to happen.
Survivors spent up to seven hours in 11°C water.
