It is our first full day in Dalat, Vietnam and we will be hiking "Samson Mountain" (which we will come to find out is actually called Dinh Pinhatt).
Dalat is a mountain town in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. We start our day at one of the many coffee shops in town and make some plans for the day. We were originally going to visit some waterfalls in the area but we find what appears to be a hike to a great viewpoint on “Samson Mountain.”
After breakfast, we stop and pick up some banh mis for a picnic lunch and then head back to our place to get packed and ready to go.
There is very limited information online outside of guided tour info so we ask someone at our hotel about Samson Mountain and how to find it. We determine this isn’t actually the name and we should be looking for Pinhatt Mountain instead.
I find a blog post online that gives some general directions and off we go. We rent motorbike and have about a 30 minute drive south of our hotel to what we hope is the trailhead.
The blog post talks about passing the Da Lat Edensee Lake Resort and then shortly after coming to a gravel path across from a restaurant.
We find what we think is the gravel path but the only problem is the road is gated. it happens to be unlocked so we take our chances and walk through. We are then met with a sleeping security guard who wakes up as we walk past and is not so happy to see us so we turn back.
We head to the restaurant to regroup and have our picnic lunch. The restaurant is more of a local picnic area right on the lake and we meet a very friendly local who shares an orange with us and explains (by pointing) that there is a different road that also leads to the top of the mountain.
We head on the 2nd road to be met with another security post where we get turned away yet again.
We find another local and ask him if he knows where the viewpoint is. He just waves for us to follow him and hops on his motorbike and rides off. We quickly follow but he is taking us on a very steep, narrow and uneven dirt path so we ditch our bike and follow on foot.
He leads us over a hill on a dirt path that then connects to a road. He points for us to follow the road to get to the top of the mountain.
According to the blog post, we were in for a 12KM hike on a trail but what we got instead was a 6KM walk up a newly paved road. Honestly it was not at all the day we were expecting but it was an adventure nonetheless and the view from the top was in fact beautiful and worth all of the effort!
After our hike, we stop at a cafe on the lake before heading back into town. Once we get back to Dalat, we park the motorbike and set out to explore the city on foot.
It is a cute and charming town with a lot of French architectural influence. There are flowers everywhere, the air is dry and cool and it has a very local feel.
We find a restaurant to try Banh Trang Nuong which is a traditional Vietnamese dish we have not yet had during our 3 + weeks here. It is basically like a Vietnamese pizza and it is delicious!
We continue to wander the hilly streets and small parks of Dalat until the sun sets!
