Why you should be weary of facility warnings for your allergens.

Описание: Some people can tolerate trace amounts of their allergen. Some cannot. It’s different for every person and it’s important to speak with your allergist about what kind of warning labels are okay for you, and what kind of warning labels you need to avoid. What we are doing here is showing what those warning labels can mean, and in this situation, it’s a game of roulette.

These Favorite Day (Target Brand) Cupid’s Arrow Pretzel Rods (white chocolate dipped, 6 count) have both a contain statement and a warning label for allergens. They contain milk, soy and wheat. The warning label says, “Processed in a facility that also handles peanut and tree nut ingredients.”

As Harley passed the first three, I thought we were in the clear, so I had her check the last three together. When she alerted, we had to break it down further. She ended up alerting to 2 out of the 6 - 1/3 of the pretzel rods in the package. Depending on your comfort label, that might be a risk that is okay for you to take. It’s not a risk that we can take. But what does this all show us? It shows us that manufacturing processes in facilities can result in cross-contact if the facility is not free of the allergen, or if stringent practices aren’t in place to prevent cross-contact. If you have food allergies or take care of someone with food allergies, make sure you read every label, every time.
