Women and girls with disabilities experience all forms of violence, intersectional discrimination, Gender Based Violence, Harmful Practices and denied sexual reproductive health rights. The impact of Covid-19 has increased their challenges as existing programs meant to protect them are not paying attention to their unique needs, leaving them vulnerable and at risk. Through the European Union-funded Spotlight Initiative to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls in Zimbabwe, the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa partnered with Organizations of Persons with Disabilities to undertake community-based dialogues and GBV trainings on sexual and gender-based violence - and harmful practices - which negatively affect women and girls with disabilities.
This initiative is meant to Promote a culture of inclusivity of women and girls with disabilities into community-based Spotlight Initiative programmes, and address SGBV, SRHR, HP among women and girls with disabilities.This advocacy tool has been developed into 3 versions with the testimonies being translated into English, Shona, Ndebele and Sign language.
