Paikuse School is a school where traditions are valued, but also the sight is set on the future.
It is a basic school with 582 pupils and part of it is a non-formal education centre. The school focuses on students discovering their strengths and the knowledge of how to consciously develop those strengths through research and creativity, integrating formal and non-formal education and getting first experiences in self-directed learning.
Besides the mandatory subjects in the national curriculum the school curriculum also has inquiry-based learning, economics, choirs, folk dance, different sports. Physical education classes also include danceable movement and ballroom dance. The school has chess and computer lessons, students can take part in photography, creative reading, drama classes, “broaden your horizon”, also science and technology clubs. In the past few years students have also participated in different international workshops.
Paikuse School’s non-formal education centre consists of a digital centre and an arts centre. The arts centre offers painting, graphics, glass and ceramic works, contemporary dance, musical instruments, and digital music lessons. The digital centre offers robotics, digital creativity, multimedia, sound engineering, drones, and programming lessons. Pre-schoolers have the opportunity to play different educational digital games to prepare for school.
Teachers’ self-development focuses on general competences including digital competences. Teachers participate in different trainings and conduct workshops. The school organises an educational conference every year in which different current educational topics are discussed.
The school’s new development plan focuses on creating an integrated curriculum for art and science lessons to further use non-formal education activities to achieve learning results in formal education.
