Global Perspectives on the Management of Cholecystitis: New Answers to an Old Question
Cholecystitis is one of the most common indications for surgical consultation worldwide. In spite of centuries of experience and volumes of literature devoted to this disease, it remains a tremendous source of morbidity and mortality. The advent of antibiotics, development of laparoscopic techniques, and evolution of endoscopic interventions have each, in turn, revolutionized treatment of cholecystitis. Imaging modalities, including ultrasound, HIDA, and MRCP have likewise transformed diagnosis and management of cholecystitis. These advancements notwithstanding, there remains controversy among surgeons as to the best approach to this disease. This Panel Session will feature a robust discussion with surgeons from around the world who will address these controversies and highlight the most innovative, reliable, safe, and effective strategies for managing cholecystitis in a variety of contexts.
