In the early 1980s, India’s car market was limited, dominated by Ambassador and Premier Padmini. Cars were expensive, inefficient, and out of reach for the middle class. That’s when the Government of India decided to create an affordable, modern car for common people.
In 1981, a joint venture was formed between the Indian government and Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation – giving birth to Maruti Udyog Limited. In 1983, the first Maruti 800 rolled out, priced at just ₹47,500. It was fuel-efficient, compact, and reliable – a dream car for the Indian middle class.
The Maruti 800 became a cultural icon, putting India on wheels. Over the years, models like Alto, Swift, WagonR, and Dzire further cemented Maruti Suzuki as the leader of India’s automobile market.
Today, Maruti Suzuki sells 1 out of every 2 cars in India, proving how a vision to make cars for the common man turned into India’s biggest automobile success story. 🚗✨
