This video features the discussion of the ‘Gender and social inclusion’ panel at the REAL Centre’s 10th anniversary conference held on 12 June 2025. Panellists were: Dr Amna Ansari, REAL Centre; Lucy Lake, Yidan Prize Foundation and formerly CAMFED; and Sally Gear, Global Partnership for Education. The panel was moderated by Professor Pauline Rose, Director of the REAL Centre.
Evidence generated by the REAL Centre has particularly emphasised the critical role of challenging restrictive social norms that perpetuate educational disparities for girls and other marginalised groups. The panel reflected on global shifts in the past decade, outlining concrete examples of how the REAL Centre and partners have contributed to these. The panel also discussed priorities for driving future change – putting our learning into practice will require becoming more practical about social norms, assessing their linkages within education as well
