Hi I'm Kevin Rudolph (not Rudolf). I have seen many comments on videos with Steinbergers asking why the head isn't there and how you tune it, so I decided to demonstrate.
The reason there is no head was for better balance. Ned Steinberger who designed this system removed the headstock because it makes the instrument very neck heavy. As a result he needed a different tuning system so he invented one. It is called direct pull tuning and uses a string with a ball at each end so there is no winding around a tuning peg. The result was fantastic faster string changes better tuning stability and with a 40:1 ratio it can be very finely tuned.
I am using Rotosound swing bass 66 double ball end strings. I fell in love with these strings the first time I put them on. From now on they are the only strings that go on my Steinberger!
