Naming: The street is named after Hakim Surjan Singh, a prominent 19th-century physician (Hakeem) who lived there. He was highly respected and famously treated members of the royal family and common people alike during the Sikh and early British eras.
Architecture: The street features architecture from the Mughal, Sikh, and British periods. Most of the 23 buildings in the lane were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting the traditional residential style of old Lahore.
Narrow Layout: It is known for being exceptionally narrow, at some points measuring only about 2.5 feet (0.76 meters) wide. This design was historically used in the Walled City to help confuse invaders.
Modern Restoration
The street gained international attention after 2011 as a pilot project for urban rehabilitation.
The Project: In 2007, a partnership between the Government of Punjab and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), with funding from the World Bank and the German Embassy, began restoring the street.
Features: The restoration included rehabilitating building facades, placing all utilities (gas, electricity, and water) underground, and paving the street with traditional brickwork.
Cultural Preservation: One of the most famous features of Gali Surjan Singh is its "tharas" (raised platforms outside homes). These were preserved to encourage the traditional practice of neighbors gathering to socialize.

Today, Gali Surjan Singh serves as a successful example of how historic residential areas can be modernized while preserving their cultural heritage.
