In this video we compare the image quality of these two lenses with some side by side astrophotography images taken with the 45MP Nikon Z7II. I examine the images in Lightroom and give my thoughts on how the lenses perform.

🎯 My Recommendation for Astrophotography
After comparing these two lenses side by side across multiple night sky scenes and exposures, I think the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 S is the stronger performer for astrophotography overall. While the Nikon Z 35mm f/1.4 does give you a slightly faster maximum aperture, it also shows noticeably more astigmatism, chromatic aberration, and softer star rendering, especially wide open, which makes it less ideal for pinpoint star images. The 35mm f/1.8 S consistently produces sharper stars across the frame, with better control of aberrations even at wider apertures, and the vignetting it shows is much easier to correct in post. For most night sky shooters, that translates into cleaner, more consistent results without having to stop down as much. If your main goal is astrophotography or nightscape photography, I think the additional performance of the 35mm f/1.8 S makes the extra cost worth it. That said, if you really need the absolute maximum aperture for other types of photography, the f/1.4 can still have its place, but for stars and night skies, the f/1.8 S is the better choice in my experience.
