Starting January 21, 2026, the U.S. government is expected to implement an immigrant visa ban affecting up to 75 countries. Immigrant visas are how many families eventually obtain lawful permanent residence, often through petitions filed by U.S. citizens for spouses, children, and parents and complete the consular process.

Many applicants have followed the rules, paying fees, completing interviews, and waiting years or even decades. This new policy introduces an indefinite pause, with no clear guidance on when processing may resume.

At this time, nonimmigrant visas are expected to continue, but immigrant visa issuance may remain frozen for an extended period.
