The echani handmaidens swore an oath to never learn the ways of the Jedi. The last of the handmaidens is no longer convinced that Atris is in the right. The exile's truth echoes from her now, thus she breaks this oath and follows in her mother's foot steps. Or is she? Like Kreia said, one does not need to be Jedi to learn how to use the force. Atris would surely cry semantics.
