This music, which I wrote in 1978, was inspired by the book 沈黙 (Chinmoku - Silence) by Shusaku Endo (a historical novel based on events in Japan in the 17th century -
the title refers to the silence of God
in the face of suffering)
Kichijiro is the name of the protagonist in the novel, who betrays his fellow Christians through lack of understanding.
Half-way through, the music goes into a moving and sad minor pentatonic version of the carol "O Come all you faithful" (Adeste fideles) followed by a slightly more energetic version
of the original theme mixed with the carol.
It is performed here by Robert Billington and Rene Gonzalez
