Top Pre-2000s Mahou Shoujo Anime Openings

Описание: Madoka Magica was my first proper majokko anime (well, technically Doremi, but I was too young back then to remember even 2% of it, besides the OP and ED) and ever since I have always found myself coming back to this genre.

Well anyways, I tried to define what counted as a majokko show and well, defining majokko was almost as convoluted as figuring out what qualified as an isekai. It was chaos ( particularly AniDB cuz tags there tagged any anime with magical girl, not thematically magical girl) and moved to MAL instead which despite its flaws actually had a more streamlined tagging system.

"Magical girls (also known both in Japan and in the West as mahou shoujo, and in Japan as majokko) are young girls with superhuman abilities of magical nature. In the early years, magical girls usually used magic to solve everyday problems and often transformed into idols; nowadays, however, the term is most often used to refer to with girls who fight evil using magical powers, and, although transformations are still common, they tend to be more along the lines of a change of costume." This was the definition of 'Magical Girl' tag in AniDB.

I came up with my own criteria to figure out what actually qualifies as a true majokko anime beyond just the genre label.

✝ Protagonist Check: Is she a regular girl?
✝ Henshin Check: Is there an explicit transformation sequence?
✝ Origin Check: Are her powers arcane? (illusion is okay cuz without love, it cannot be seen...)
✝ Duty Check: Does she have a clear duty or quest?
✝ Atmosphere Check: Is the tone mystical?
✝ All the anime MAL had tagged as magical girl anime

With this system, I started filtering out stuffs with asterisk like Corrector Yui and Cutie Honey. They might be magical girl adjacent, but they miss enough of the criteria that I’m comfortable yeeting them out of the category.

Worth noting: Japanese Wikipedia throws a wrench into things by subdividing a bunch of these into micro genres (like Phantom Thief etc), even when they do hit all my criteria.
