Cute 3-Year-Olds Sparring in Karate (funny)

For 20 years, Sensei Green has taught 3 and 4 year olds in traditional karate. Since 1998, Green has refereed and judged with the USA-N.K.F (United States of America National Karate Do Federation).

In 1999, Green had a 5-year-old compete in kata and sparring at the Alaska State Championship. In 2006, Green took a 5 year old and he won 4th place in kata and kumite(sparring). So close but not close enough for a medal. In 2007, Green took three 5-year-olds hoping that one would win a medal. They all came back with some hardware! There were 2 girls and a boy that competed!

The boy won bronze in sparring in the 5 and under boys beginner kumite (coo me tae) division. The two girls won gold and bronze in the 5 and under beginner girls kata division. So essentially 2 out of 3 medals were won by Green's Karate.

We have students from time to time compete in tournaments but never force anyone to go! However, we have won before and we know we can win again.

Most importantly though is that for children it is not about winning but about having fun. We never say that the student has to win. They have to find that determination within themselves.
