Russia launches railway connection with annexed Crimea

A rail route linking Russia to the Crimea peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014, officially opened this week.
The first train left St. Petersburg on Monday afternoon carrying more than 500 people on the 2-thousand-500 kilometer trip to Sevastopol , a ride that takes 43 hours.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin was also on hand at the launching ceremony,... saying the 19 kilometer Kerch Strait bridge would have a positive impact on Russia's economy.
The Russian government is expecting the new route to carry around 14 million passengers and 13-million tons of freight next year.
The railway was immediately condemned by the EU as "another violation" by Russia of Ukraine's sovereignty and territory.
