Both Roman Catholicism and Reformed Protestantism stand on the foundation of Augustinian anthropology and philosophy. So who was Augustine, what did he believe and why did he have a pet hippo?

Augustine was a former Manichean convert to Christianity. Regrettably, he let his his former Manichean beliefs influence his understanding of Scripture, filtering it through his neo-Platonist philosophical commitment. He built upon pre-existing errors, tweaking and repackaging them into what would come to be known as the doctrine of Original Sin.

A summary of some of his more outlandish beliefs:

1. Unbaptized infants go to hell due to Adam's sin, but it isn't as hot for them as it is for adults; though some baptized infants also go to hell.

2. Being intimate with your wife for pleasure is worse than with a "lady of the night".

3. The use of violence to force conversion to Christianity is acceptable.

4. The use of contraception in marriage is adultery.

5. Only those trained in the sciences approved by Augustine should be allowed to teach theology.
