We are huge advocates of NOT letting a new employee, not yet trained, answer the phones because the phones are our lifeline to the outside and your new patients. We need to be sure that whomever is answering is trained and equipped with the skills they need to set up your office for success.

The phone is the most important piece of technology in your dental office and if we are not skilled at answering the phones, we will not be skilled at converting patients and the end result will be an empty schedule.

Here a few areas Laura suggests new dental receptionists are competent in before answering the phones in a dental office:

1. Have they completed any training? (Check out our Front Office Rocks Phone Mastery Training Course below!)
2. Do they have a basic understanding of the phones and the technical how to’s?
3. Do they have a basic understanding of how they are supposed to handle the phones and the different types of calls they might receive?
4. Do they know how to answer and handle the specific questions they might receive during a call?
5. Do they have the confidence to handle these questions, to follow the office policies and to clearly communicate with your patients?
