Did you know that in southern Ethiopia, among the isolated Hamar tribe, a boy does not become a man with age — but in a single moment?
During an ancient ritual called Ukuli Bula, a boy, completely naked and barefoot, must run across the backs of several bulls lined up side by side. He must not fall. He must not miss a single one. If he succeeds, his fate is sealed — he will be allowed to marry when he grows up.
But the hardest part of this ritual is not endured by the boy.
It belongs to the women.
Here, courage is not proven by words, but by the marks left on the body.
What you see is the whipping of women who voluntarily ask to be whipped. Bruises and scars are not punishment — they are symbols of honor, loyalty, and lifelong commitment.
With rhythmic dancing, drums, and homemade fermented alcohol, the ceremony feels raw and intense. There is no acting, no performance, and no modern world.
This was the most original and fascinating ceremony I have ever witnessed.

This is life — as it was thousands of years ago, and still is!
