Wow! Pamela's New Workout is immense! While all you can see here is "press play and go away", there's some careful planning and programming working away behind the scenes.
Patch notes:
The idea is to have Braids play a semi-random "melody" and periodically freezing the output into Clouds' buffer for some lovely granular processing.
I think the cleanest way to explain this patch is just to go through what Pam is doing, channel by channel. So here goes (note that all the settings I don't list are at the default value):
~ Channel 1: A fast random signal, controlling Clouds' grain size. The fast rate ensures that the size will change from one grain to the next (mostly, I think).
Settings: x48 | RND | level 25%
~ Channel 2: A slow, skewed triangle wave controlling Braids' timbre, as well as Pam's own CV1 (I'll come back to that).
Settings: /56 | TRI | Width 75%
~ Channel 3: A slow, skewed triangle controlling Braids' color. Braids is in WMAP (Wavetable Map) mode, so timbre and color is used to navigate through different wavetables by cartesian coordinates. Note that these are modulated at different rates by slightly different shapes, so as not to repeat themselves quickly.
Settings: /64 | TRI | Width 30%
~ Channel 4: A very slow triangle controlling Clouds' grain density.
Settings: /128 | TRI | Level 35% | Phase 50%
~ Channel 5: A gate to toggle Clouds' freeze. Note the high width: it's nearly always on.
Settings: /128 | GATE | Width 90% | Phase 90%
~ Channel 6: Super-slow triangle, scrubbing through Clouds' buffer.
Settings: /256 | TRI
~ Channel 7: Random "melody" for Braids. This one uses a looped random sequence, but it also has the slop turned up to max (which also creates timing variations, which is cool) so it's still randomized somewhat, but may repeat some general movements. I'm CV controlling the loop length, so at shorter length there will be less notes played because the chance of repeating the same note twice in a row is greater, and Braids ignores these repeats. Finally, I'm CV controlling the level, to create periodic variation in the range of available notes.
Settings: x4 | RND | Level CV2 (offset 20% | attenuation 30%) | Loop CV1 (offset 8%) | Slop 100%
~ Channel 8: slow, random modulation of Channel 7's level.
Settings: /128 | RND
A neat thing about having all of these perfectly synced modulation sources is that it's possible to set up carefully planned interactions, where two or more modulated parameters consistently line up in interesting ways. In this patch, for instance, I've made sure that Clouds' buffer stutters to a halt (by way of the density parameter) just before it unfreezes. And it scrubs exactly once through the buffer when frozen, but alternates going forwards and backwards.
