In July 1996, a family of 4 German tourists drove a rented minivan into the most remote corner of Death Valley National Park. They never came out.
Egbert Rimkus, 34. His girlfriend Cornelia Meyer, 28. His son Georg, 11. Her son Max, 4. They flew into Los Angeles on July 8th. They were supposed to fly home July 27th. They never got on the plane.
91 days later, a park ranger in a helicopter spotted their minivan buried in the sand in Anvil Spring Canyon. 3 flat tires. Rims bent. No road. No people. No footprints. No sign of life in any direction.
The park launched its largest search in history. 45 searchers. 2 helicopters. 8 horses. They covered hundreds of square miles and found exactly 1 thing: a single beer bottle under a bush a mile and a half from the van.
4 people walked into the desert and vanished.
For 13 years, nothing. Then a search-and-rescue volunteer from Riverside, California named Tom Mahood asked a question nobody else thought to ask. Not where did they go. But why. And what he found changed everything.
This is the full investigative breakdown. Every decision. Every wrong turn. And the moment a volunteer with 8 months of experience solved a case that 250 professional searchers couldn't.
