Today the journey takes us to eastern Germany. From the Mecklenburg Lake District, the route follows the rivers Havel and Spree through Berlin into the Spree floodplains in Brandenburg.

In autumn, the Rederangsee hosts an impressive spectacle: thousands of cranes gather here before migrating south. The route leads via the Mirower Seenkette to the Rheinsberger Rhin. This wild and romantic watercourse can only be used by kayaks. At Lake Stechlin, 70 meters deep and located in one of the darkest areas in Germany, limnologist Stella Berger uses a floating sea laboratory to research the influence of light pollution on the underwater world.

On a solar powered houseboat, the journey continues through the Ruppin Switzerland nature reserve to Lake Lehnitz. Here we meet Canadian author Jessica Lee. She swam all of the lakes in and around Berlin – and published her experiences in a book. The rivers Havel and Spree lead to the center of Berlin. Architect brothers Tim and Jan Edler have a remarkable vision for a side channel of the Spree at the Museum Island. They want to create a river bath in the middle of the city. Solutions for the hygienic hurdles have been found – but the bureaucratic ones still have to be overcome.

Via Müggelspree and Dahme, we venture into the Spreewald region. Three bartenders from Berlin operate a whiskey distillery in the picturesque village of Schlepzig. The journey ends in the floodplains of the Spree, where hydraulic engineer Christoph Gerstgraser has converted a section of the once channelled Spree back into a thriving biotope.
