Hi everyone,
Day 5 of my New Zealand South Island road trip is honestly one of those days that reminds you why road trips hit differently here. This entire vlog is about slow travel, budget stays, unreal scenery, and that feeling of not knowing what’s around the next corner but trusting it’s going to be beautiful.
We start the day in a small town called Calzona, where we check into our next accommodation. Because this is a South Island road trip on a budget, I always try to find places that are affordable but still comfortable. In this video, I give you a full tour of the stay so you can see exactly what we got for the price we paid. The room setup, the kitchen, the bathroom, the small details and everything that actually matters when you’re traveling for multiple days.
I also share what I ate for dinner the night before and exactly how much it cost. When you are road-tripping in New Zealand, food expenses can add up quickly, especially in tourist areas.
The next morning — Day 5 — I show you what I am having for breakfast while enjoying the peaceful view from our stay. One of the best parts about traveling in the South Island is that even a simple breakfast feels special when you are surrounded by mountains and fresh air.
After breakfast, we begin our drive towards Glenorchy with a possible stop in Queenstown if time allows. I have really wanted to explore Queenstown properly because so many people call it one of the most beautiful places in the world.
On the way, I share an important travel tip for anyone planning a South Island road trip: always carry a garbage bag in your car. In many scenic areas across New Zealand, there aren’t bins available. You’re expected to take your rubbish with you. And honestly, that’s one of the reasons these places remain so clean and untouched. If you are planning a road trip from Queenstown to Glenorchy or anywhere around Otago, this is something you should keep in mind.
The drive itself is unreal. The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is often called one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand, and I can see why. The mountains, the lake views, the changing light — everything feels cinematic. There are multiple pull-over spots along the way where you can park safely, step out, take photos, have snacks, or just stand there and take it all in.
We enter Queenstown briefly, and I share small glimpses of the town — the lake, the vibe, the surrounding mountains. But since we are short on time, I tell you that I will properly explore Queenstown the next day. Sometimes on a road trip, you have to make decisions based on daylight.
From there, we continue towards Glenorchy. This stretch of road is honestly something I would recommend to anyone visiting New Zealand.
A little further ahead, I go looking for a lupin field I had heard about. During lupin season in New Zealand, you can find beautiful purple and pink flowers growing with mountains in the background. It’s one of those spots that feels almost too pretty to be real. I wasn’t sure if the lupins would still be there, but after driving a bit further, we found the location. And yes, it was exactly as beautiful as I imagined. In the vlog, I take you along as we walk around and enjoy the view.
After that, we head to a filming location from The Lord of the Rings. The Glenorchy area is well known for its connection to The Lord of the Rings movies. Even if you are not a huge fan of the films, the landscape itself is stunning. There were people horse riding, and you can also book different outdoor activities in this region if you want a more adventurous experience.
We make another scenic stop where I have a small snack while enjoying the view.
As the evening approaches, we decide to go back to the same lupin spot for sunset. The lighting changes everything.
Unfortunately, we realize that it’s getting too dark to properly explore Queenstown that day. So we make the decision to head back, arrange dinner, and return to our accommodation. And I let you know that tomorrow is dedicated to exploring Queenstown.
This Day 5 vlog is a mix of practical travel information and real road trip moments. If you are planning a New Zealand South Island road trip, especially around Queenstown & Glenorchy, this video will give you a clear idea of what to expect from accommodation prices to food costs to scenic drives & travel tips.
