This song is the words of John 1:1-18 set to music - what is known as the 'Prologue of the Gospel of St John' - most of the song is taken literally from the Bible text, with a few small modifications to fit the music and the order of some of the words has been changed slightly for the purposes of the song. John's Gospel begins with these words which show that Jesus - whom he had met personally, had lived alongside for 3 years, had eaten and drunk with, had seen suffer and die on the cross, and whose presence he had witnessed anew with them after His resurrection, whom he had seen eating and drinking with them after that same resurrection and whose ascension into heaven he had witnessed, followed by the coming of the Holy Spirit - this same Jesus who had lived on earth in human flesh, was with God from the beginning - and more: He was God from the beginning. Jesus is the LOGOS - the Word of God made flesh, the Son of the Living God, the Saviour of the World, the One who gives power to become children of God to all who believe in His name.
