Today we'll be talking about dental crowns and one of the most common questions is, "do dental crowns ruin my teeth?"

Dental crowns are done to protect with teeth, to restore a tooth back to its original form and function, and it also helps to prevent worsening of cracks or fractures in your teeth.

In order to fit the crown over your teeth to restore it to its original shape and function, the crown needs to be trimmed on all its surfaces - on top and the front and its sides as well.

The amount of trimming that will need to be done will vary depending on the type of crown. Metal crowns such as gold crowns, need the least amount of trimming because a thin sheet of metal can be very strong, but full porcelain crowns, like this one, need a lot more trimming because it needs a thicker amount of material to prevent it from cracking or breaking, and to give it sufficient strength.

Remember to check with your dentist on which type of crowns will be best suited for your condition as well as your needs.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is cemented onto existing teeth or implants. Crowns can be used to strengthen and protect a damaged or cracked tooth, and/or after a tooth has had root canal treatment done, and/or improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function.

When do you need a dental crown?

To protect a weak, cracked or damaged tooth from further breakage
To restore a severely worn or cracked tooth
To reinforce a tooth with a large filling
To reinforce a tooth that has had root canal treatment
To cover poorly shaped or severely discolored teeth

What are dental crowns made of?

The most popular type of dental crown in the market today is Zirconia. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, other types of porcelain (lithium disilicate) or resin-ceramic hybrids. Porcelain can also be combined with zirconia or metal bases.
