A memorial honoring unborn children will be installed on the Tennessee Capitol grounds by June 24, 2026, the third anniversary of Roe v. Wade's overturning. The monument, resembling a cemetery marker, aims to recognize the humanity of unborn children, according to State Sen. Janice Bowling.
The memorial's approval in 2018 sparked controversy. Republican supporters, like State Rep. William Lamberth, see it as recognition for children who died in the womb. However, Democrats, including State Rep. John Ray Clemmons and State Sen. Heidi Campbell, criticize it as stigmatizing women and politicizing a sensitive issue, arguing the Capitol should remain neutral.
The seven-year delay was due to funding and design challenges. Private donations fund the project, with fundraising ongoing. Despite ongoing opposition, organizers plan to proceed with the unveiling.
