📘 塞翁失马|Sai Weng Loses His Horse
Level:HSK 2–3(Elementary Level)
📖 Story Meaning:
The idiom “塞翁失马” comes from an ancient Chinese fable about fortune and misfortune.
A long time ago, an old man called Sai Weng lived on the frontier.
One day, one of his horses ran away, and everyone felt sorry for him.
But Sai Weng calmly said:
“This may not be a bad thing.”
Later, the runaway horse returned with a beautiful new horse.
The neighbors congratulated him, but again Sai Weng said:
“This may not be a good thing.”
Sai Weng’s son loved the new horse, but he fell while riding it and broke his leg.
The neighbors pitied Sai Weng, but he said once more:
“This may not be a bad thing.”
Not long after, war broke out. All the young men were called to fight, and many never returned.
Because his son’s leg was broken, he did not go to war and survived.
👉 This story teaches us:
Misfortune may turn into a blessing.
Good fortune may turn into misfortune.
