The Chandi Mata Temple in Panchkula is close to the Chandimandir Cantonment complex, a well-known military installation that houses the Indian Army's Western Command headquarters.
How Chandigarh got its name......
The Punjab province was divided between India and Pakistan upon India's independence in 1947. Indian Punjab was left without a capital when Lahore, the province's former capital, moved to Pakistan. A new city that could function as the capital of the Indian state of Punjab was required.
The groundwork for a contemporary, planned the city was established in the early 1950s under the direction of Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister at the time, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India's first president. The decision-makers decided to respect the area's spiritual and cultural heritage while deciding on the name of this future capital city.
The ancient Chandi Mata Temple, devoted to the goddess Chandi, a furious manifestation of Durga, was located nearby. The villagers had an enormous amount of respect for this shrine, which they called Chandi Mandir. Chandi-ka-Garh, or "the fortress of Chandi," was the name given to the surrounding area.
Officially, the name Chandigarh was chosen to reflect the goddess's might and power as well as her historical and religious significance. The goddess is known as Chandi, and the word "Garh" implies fort or fortress, signifying a city of divine authority.
