By 1980, Braniff operated the second youngest fleet of efficient airliners in the US airline industry. A beautiful fleet of Boeing 727 and 747 airliners and McDonnell Douglas DC-8-62 Ultra Space Jets. Earlier, in December 1971, the company shrewdly adopted one of the first Fleet Standardization Plans. This plan called for Boeing 727 Trijets assigned to Domestic and Mexico services; a single Boeing 747 for Hawaii and McDonnell Douglas DC-8-62 Intercontinental Jets for Latin America.
The cost savings associated with standardizing the fleet gave Braniff an added advantage in its unit costs that further allowed it become a competitive powerhouse. Braniff had zero problems competing with any other carrier that might be allowed by the Civil Aeronautics Board to operate over Braniff's routes. The CAB began experimenting in the mid-1960s with adding additional competition over high density routes that had traditionally been controlled by one or two airlines. This caused all airlines to experience reduced load factors and accordingly fares were adjusted to compensate for the added competition. However, Braniff was able to operate at very low load factors because of its fleet planning and other cost saving initiatives such as producing its own aircraft interior parts at the Dallas Love Field Base.
