Hidden Folly and a Secret Grotto

Описание: Today’s location is not open to the public and is not readily accessible. History wise it is in a wood associated with Talacre Hall, a site that was occupied by the Mostyn family from the 1500's until the early 1900's. The current house was built for the family between 1824 and 1829 by Thomas Jones. It is probably at that time, or possibly sometime later in the 19th century that the folly and grotto were created. In 1921 the house was sold to a closed order of Benadictine nuns. It was renamed from Talacre Hall to Talacre Abbey and in 1931 a church was added to the front of the house. The nuns remained until 1988. Some of them are burried on the hillside in a private cemetary, unfortunately we didn't have time to visit it. The house was used as a wedding venue and was recently sold for a shockingly low 1.5 Million. It is still privately owned. It is not abandonned and appears to be undergoing some renovation. It now has a completely new name Westbury Castle! Perhaps one day the folly and grotto will be renovated too. I don't feel that the grotto has a sinister side, I feel that it was created in the Victorian era simply for entertainment. There is some suggestion of Knights Templar involvement and although the main 'well' shares some properties with other known Templar structures, I could see no signs of Templar symbology, or anything to suggest a link. It was interesting to note that there appeared to have been a void behind the cross and I wonder if at sometime something had been hidden there!
