Men Most Vulnerable In India's Heatwave Crisis

Описание: A new NDTV Datafy analysis based on NCRB data reveals a sharp gender divide in heatstroke deaths across India, with men accounting for a disproportionately high number of fatalities during extreme heat conditions in 2024.

The data shows that the highest number of heatwave deaths occurred among working-age men between 30 and 59 years old. In the 45-59 age group alone, 577 men died due to heatstroke compared to 81 women, while the 30-44 category recorded 525 male deaths against 48 female fatalities.

Experts say the disparity may be linked to occupational exposure, with men more likely to work outdoors in sectors such as construction, transport, agriculture and industrial labour during peak summer temperatures.

The figures once again underline the growing human cost of extreme heat and climate stress in India, as rising temperatures continue to pose severe risks to vulnerable populations and outdoor workers across the country.
