Fruits & Veggies: the WaterStory
The Concept:
Intro: Talking about what is agriculture and the problems the food production is causing: for example, climate change, eutrophication and acid rain, and drain of resources of nutrients, land area, energy, and water. Agriculture accounts for 70% of all water use. Both primary food production and food processing are critically dependent on water supply and good water quality.
Discussing with children about the possible solution, giving them hints but also the time to figure solutions out. To offer some possible solution:
– buy locally produced food (less fossil fuel is used for its transportation)
– choose organic over non-organic food (without the use of chemicals which means
that it reduces water, soil and air pollution)
– eat seasonal fruit and vegetables
– at home: save water by rinsing your vegetables and fruit in a bowl, Turn off taps tightly, try composting, re-use same cup all day (wash less dishes), avoid frying food,..
Drawing Imagine... How if the plants could talk to us, how they would help us solve these water issues. As opposed to the Veggie Portraits workshop, where children were drawing portraits of vegetables as if they were real people, this time children will paint and draw (this time with water, brushes and water colours) fruit and vegetables again given the human attributes. The main task will be to draw the possible solutions and the situations in which fruits and veggies help save the waters and clean water supply, and so they help the humanity.
Together we will explore in what ways can we draw a story, while raising the awareness of the water issues.
Target Group:
all children aged 7-14
Number of participants: Min. 3, max. 20
Duration:
in 2 parts: each around an hour + small exhibition of the artworks afterwards
Outcomes:
• Learning to draw a story and to follow the storyline
• Building self-confidence through creative expression
• Developing creativity in new ways of thinking
• Improving drawing skills
• Recognizing connections of water in nature and food, and practicing problem- solving skills
About the Artist:
Ivona Pelajic graduated in 2010 from the Art Education and Painting department, at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb. After graduating, she worked as an art teacher, as well as in art and cultural organizations in Croatia, Belgium and Germany. Since 2014 she has been living and working in Berlin, where she has also conducted several arts and crafts workshops for kids. Since 2018 Pelajic has been studying in Sweden, at the Applied Arts and Design Faculty (HDK) at the University of Gothenburg, where she is currently attending MFA postgraduate program: Child Culture Design. She is particularly interested in promoting children’s creativity and creating space for children in the urban environment, through participative design. Pelajic is also making artworks herself, with particular interest in traditional painting, digital illustration and everyday objects in wood.
