“Workin’ Man Blues” was written and recorded by Merle Haggard in 1969. Released on June 30, 1969 as the second single from his album A Portrait of Merle Haggard, the track was produced by Ken Nelson and featured Haggard’s band, The Strangers. The B-side of the single was “Silver Wings.”
The song became a major hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and also topping the Canadian country charts. It is considered one of Haggard’s signature songs, paying tribute to America’s blue-collar workers. Musically, it is a prime example of the Bakersfield Sound, a style of country music characterized by electric guitars, a driving rhythm, and a raw, honky-tonk edge. Over time, “Workin’ Man Blues” has been covered by artists including Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Diamond Rio, cementing its place as a classic anthem of working-class pride.
