The Transonic and Supersonic wind tunnel at the University of Cambridge consists of two parallel working sections with a max wind speed of Mach 3.5.
One of the key draws to this facility is that it can run at industrially relevant Reynolds numbers due to a relatively high operating pressure of 40atm and at a modest university operating cost. For example, a project carried out for Rolls-Royce evaluated aircraft engines under off-design conditions, where the researchers looked at an aircraft in climb, with a high angle of attack or with a lot of cross wind where the flow into the inlet is not ideal.
This wind tunnel is also used by academic researchers to study the physics of compressible flows, particularly areas like shock boundary layer interactions and flow control. These wind tunnel tests utilise a range of techniques from schlieren visualisation and pressure tap data to laser doppler velocimetry and pressure sensitive paint.
The Transonic and Supersonic facility is open to industry and university researchers. Find out more at www.nwtf.ac.uk or contact [email protected].
Thank you to Prof Holger Babinsky and Dr Kshitij Sabnis for taking part in this NWTF film.
