This painting was created in 1954, 9 years after World War II ended. Perhaps the father in this painting is a veteran of that war.
I interpret the father holding the hats as his way of wanting to hold his son close in the only way he knows how. Perhaps he feels like he can’t get up and hug his boy or tell him how proud he is. Maybe he thinks that’s not something men do.
But he can wait for the train with his son. He can hold his hat and keep him company for those few minutes they still have together. Perhaps savoring the bittersweet emotions he now feels as he watches the only innocent thing in his life that survived the war leave his side.
I like the little detail that the son’s new hat is on top of his father’s old, worn one, almost symbolizing how his father always put him first.
I just adore Norman Rockwell.
