In 2018, a young couple, Josh Niles and Amber Washburn, moved to Carlton Street in the small town of Sodus, New York, population about 8,000. Josh, then 28, grew up in Newark, Wayne County, in a family of five siblings. Amber, four years younger than Josh, had been dating him for years, but they had never officially married. Josh had two children from a previous marriage, and his two children currently lived with him and Amber. In addition, the couple raised another child together, named Joshua Jr. Amber got along well with her boyfriend's children and treated them like family.

Life went on as usual. Josh had saved some money and was planning to start a small business. Amber took care of the children and was also planning to find a job. The couple wanted to get married and live a happy family life. But this story will not have a happy ending.

At approximately 2 p.m. on October 22, 2018, Josh Niles left his home to go to work. He started his car and pulled into his driveway, then noticed a man sitting on a bench near his house. He realized the man was waiting for him, so Josh went outside to meet the stranger. According to neighbors who happened to notice the two men, they talked for a while and both appeared to be very stress. Then, gunshots rang out. The stranger shot Josh. At the same time, Amber was returning to the house and backing into the house. Minutes after Josh was murdered, the attacker fled.
