You will often see on social media people claiming that ‘Council Tax is illegal’, make reference to ‘the common law’ and as we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses using some obscure reference to Magna Carta to try and keep their businesses open when the country was locked down.
Most of these people are known as ‘Freeman on the Land’. They are essentially a group of individuals who make pseduolegal sounding arguments and spout other conspiracy theories to state that they are only bound by statute laws if they consent to the laws.
This is of course, completely false.
In the UK, Parliament is sovereign therefore any Acts of Parliament passed is legally binding on its citizens. It is irrelevant whether or not you ‘consent’ to those laws. It would be a great to ‘opt out' of laws you do not agree with but this does not stack up with reality.
