Seit 1981 verkehren im Sommer wieder regelmäßig Dampflokomotiven auf dieser Strecke. Die Fahrt mit der ältesten noch regelmäßig eingesetzten Dampflok der Schweiz kostet 80 Franken und bietet ein 1,5-stündiges Erlebnis mit zwei Wasserhalten. Die Bahn hat eine Spurweite von 800 mm und verwendet das Zahnstangensystem Abt. Die Dampflok H 2/3 2, gebaut 1890 von der Schweizerischen Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM), ist eine Rarität aus dem Eröffnungsjahr der Bahn.

Die Lokomotive wurde nach 25 Jahren Stillstand wieder in Betrieb genommen und bietet nun eine nostalgische Reise, die durch die atemberaubende Landschaft, den Geruch von Kohle und Öl, das rhythmische Rattern der Zahnräder und den majestätischen Klang der Dampfpfeife ein unvergessliches Erlebnis darstellt.

Il Monte Calvagione, conosciuto anche come Monte Generoso, è una montagna alta 1700 metri delle Prealpi meridionali che offre panorami suggestivi sulle Alpi e sugli Appennini. Dal 1890 una ferrovia porta da Capolago nel Mendrisiotto in Ticino al Monte Generoso, ma termina a Vetta, da dove bisogna salire ancora 100 metri a piedi fino alla vetta.

Dal 1981, d'estate, su questa tratta circolano regolarmente locomotive a vapore. Il viaggio sulla locomotiva a vapore più antica della Svizzera ancora in servizio costa 80 franchi e offre un'esperienza di un'ora e mezza con due fermate del vaporetto. La ferrovia ha una carreggiata di 800 mm e utilizza il sistema a pignone e cremagliera Abt. La locomotiva a vapore H 2/3 2, costruita nel 1890 dalla Schweizerische Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM), è una rarità dell'anno di apertura della ferrovia.
